New year, new music – isn’t that how the saying goes?
While 2017 was an amazing year for hip-hop, rock and pop are going to be the center focuses of 2018. Fall Out Boy and Justin Timberlake are both set to drop albums for the first time in years. Still, a lot of questions remain surrounding the albums of other well known artists. Here’s a basic breakdown of what we will definitely be hearing and what we want to hear.
Albums with Release Dates
Maybe her name isn’t familiar but you’ve without a doubt heard the words “Havana oh, na, na” every single day since September. Cabello has been in the spotlight since 2012, when she joined the girl group Fifth Harmony on X-Factor. However, it wasn’t until December of 2016, when she left the group, that people started learning her name. “Havana” is the featured track on her new album, Camila, dropping on January 12th. If the poppy tune about her heritage is anything to go off, people will be singing along to Camila for a long time.
Fall Out Boy
2009 was a scary year for former emo kids (you know, the people who can hear two chords of “Black Parade” and sing every word, but dress in flannel now instead of neon). It was the year Fall Out Boy went on an “indefinite hiatus” according to Chicago Tribune, but they came back swinging in 2013 with a number one album, Save Rock and Roll. Since then only one other album has been released, American Beauty/American Psycho. Both had mixed reviews.
This album, including hit song “How Long”, will be out January 19th. It’s the former YouTube star’s first album since 2016’s Nine Track Mind featuring “Marvin Gaye”, which critics believe to be the worst pop song ever written.
Man of The Woods
Fans of Timberlake have been waiting five years for a new album. It drops on February 2nd, two days before he’s going to play the Super Bowl halftime show. Coincidence? Probably not. Are people crazy excited? Hell, yeah.
Albums Announced With No Date
Nicki Minaj told The New York Times back in October that she’s been working on her fourth studio album. “This album is everything in my life coming full circle and me being truly, genuinely happy. It feels almost like a celebration,” she said. It’ll be her first album in four years. While there’s no release date or album yet, she alludes it will be “super, super iconic”.
“My next big project for the fall will be recording my new English album. I’m very, very excited. That’s going to be released in 2018, probably during the fall, could be sooner, I hope! I don’t know, but I can’t wait,” the singer told “Hello Magazine” last August. The Canadian singer released a French album just last year, but hasn’t released an English album since 2013.
Rock band Arctic Monkeys announced they were working on their sixth album to “For The Ride”, a motorcycle magazine, in September. They said it would be out sometime in 2018 and “if it isn’t we’ve got problems.”
First, Beerbongs and Bentleys, the hip-hop artist’s second album was supposed to drop June of 2017. Later, the date was changed to December. Post Malone tweeted out December 1st that it would still be a bit longer because he was trying to make it perfect. Vote in the Quibbl on when you think it will finally hit a spotify near you.
Kanye West started a rumor back when Life of Pablo was released to negative critic reviews in 2016. He said he was working on a new album, titled Turbo Grafx 16, which would be his redeeming work. According to Bustle it’s still all talk whether or not the album will actually drop. He’s had quite the busy year fighting with Taylor Swift (again) and getting ready for a new baby with wife Kim Kardashian. With this, and working on his mental health, West might not have time for an album in 2018.
Many are hoping the artist responsible for Channel Orange and Blonde will be dropping a new album this year. Although those two record breaking albums were four years apart, many believe Ocean is hinting at less of a wait for the next album. According to Vice, Ocean tweeted “5 albums before 30” and his next album will be his fifth. After his 30th birthday passed last October he wrote on Tumblr, “Well I made the album before 30. I JUST AINT PUT THAT BITCH OUT! — quotes from an interview I haven’t given haha.” The only thing certain about a new Frank Ocean album, is we won’t know it’s out until it’s in our headphones.
Referring to herself as “trap Selena”, Cardi B was one of the most popular artists of 2017. She released three singles last year, including the hit “Bodak Yellow”. Fans are hoping she will release a full-length album in 2018, but there’s no official word yet on if that’s happening.
