College Football Games of the Week

Week Five: September 27th-30th

#5 USC Trojans @ #16 Washington State Cougars

  • When: Friday 9/29, 10:30 PM EST (ESPN)
  • Where: Martin Stadium, Pullman, WA
  • Spread: USC -3.5
  • USC Players to Watch:        QB Sam Darnold: 98-146, 1225 YDS, 9 TD, 7 INT
RB Ronald Jones III: 59 CAR, 322 YDS, 5 TD
  • Wash St Players to Watch: QB Luke Falk: 130-169, 1378 YDS, 14 TD, 1 INT
WR Tavares Martin Jr: 26 REC, 390 YDS, 6 TD

Game Outlook: The USC Trojans will travel to Pullman, WA on Friday night for a battle of Pac-12 undefeateds. Led by Heisman trophy contender QB Sam Darnold, the Trojans go into week 5 action at 4-0, with quality wins over #14 Stanford, Texas, and @ California. On the opposing sideline, the Washington State Cougars have played relatively weak opponents thus far, but still have a 4-0. Washington State is led by QB Luke Falk who boasts an impressive 14/1 TD to INT ratio. Falk’s favorite target is WR Tavares Martin Jr. who has already posted 6 TDs on the year. This Pac-12 matchup will not feature much defense; expect Darnold and Falk to exchange blows back and forth in a quintessential shootout. While they have the advantage of playing at home, Washington State’s weak strength of schedule and inexperience in big games will show under the lights. USC has the experience and the superstar to march into Martin Stadium and come out with an impressive road victory. The bottom line is: Take USC to cover the spread.

Quibbl Prediction: USC 38 – Wash ST 31

#24 Mississippi State Bulldogs @ #13 Auburn Tigers

  • When: Saturday 9/30, 6:00 PM EST (ESPN)
  • Where: Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, AL
  • Spread: Auburn -9
  • Miss St Player to Watch: QB Nick Fitzgerald: 57-99, 626 YDS, 7 TD, 3 INT
  • Auburn Players to Watch: QB Jarrett Stidham: 72-102, 846 YDS, 3 TD, 2 INT
RB Kam Martin: 23 CAR, 210 YDS, 1 TD

Game Outlook: The Mississippi State Bulldogs come into week 5 following an embarrassing 31-3 blowout loss @ #11 Georgia only one week removed from their impressive victory vs #12 LSU. Dual-threat QB Nick Fitzgerald will look to boast a Mississippi State offense that struggled mightily against the staut Georgia defense last week. The Mississippi State schedule is brutal as they play their third-straight ranked opponent this week. Fatigue is most definitely setting in for the Bulldogs, and that will hurt their offensive and defensive stamina in the contest. Across the field, the #13 Auburn Tigers enter this SEC matchup after a 51-14 win over Missouri last week. The lone Tigers lose on the season was a 14-6 tally @ #3 Clemson, which was still an impressive performance on the road in a very tough environment. While transfer QB Jarrett Stidham mans the helm for the Auburn offense, the Tigers defense is what wins games. The Auburn defense has been spectacular this year, holding all four opponents to less than 14 points. With Miss St’s fatigue and lingering offensive issues from the matchup with Georgia, a strong Auburn defense could spell disaster. Ultimately, Auburn impressives again and moves to 4-1 handedly.

Quibbl Prediction: Auburn 24 – Miss St 7

#2 Clemson Tigers @ #12 Virginia Tech Hokies

  • When: 9/30 8:00 PM EST (ABC)
  • Where: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, VA
  • Spread: Clemson -7
  • Clemson Player to Watch: QB Kelly Bryant: 74-109, 873 YDS, 2 TD, 3 INT
  • Va Tech Players to Watch: QB Josh Jackson: 75-115, 1127 YDS, 11 TD, 1 INT
WR Cam Phillips: 34 REC, 523 YDS, 5 TD

Game Outlook: The College Gameday Game of the Week brings an ACC matchup between the #2 Clemson Tigers and the #12 Virginia Tech Hokies. The #2 Clemson Tigers have been very impressive this far in their title defense, boasting a 4-0 record with wins over #13 Auburn and @ #14 Louisville. Clemson dominates on both sides of the ball. Dual-threat QB Kelly Bryant has replaced superstar Deshaun Watson nicely, tallying 9 total TDs on the year thus far. The Tigers defense, led by DE Austin Bryant (5 Sacks, 6 TFL), has held all opponents to less than 21 points and is borderline impenetrable. However, the Tigers travel to one of the toughest places to play in college football: Blacksburg, VA and Lane Stadium. The #12 Virginia Tech Hokies are ready to shine in primetime, led by QB Josh Jackson who has a lofty 11/1 TD to INT ratio this season. Jackson’s favorite target Cam Phillips will look to make noise in the Clemson secondary and add to his nation-leading 523 receiving yards. The Hokies have played relatively weak opponents thus far other than a 31-24 win over #22 West Virginia, but do boast two shutouts against unranked Delaware and Old Dominion. Clemson looked lethargic through 3 quarters in their matchup with Boston College last week, and if they come out like that against Virginia Tech, the Hokies will punish the Tigers in front of their home crowd. However, Clemson’s lack of focus last week means they must have placed extra focus on this week’s game. Clemson wins the game, but does not cover the spread in a thriller that could come down to fourth quarter heroics.

Quibbl Prediction: Clemson 28-Virginia Tech 24

Ole Miss Rebels @ #1 Alabama Crimson Tide

  • When: Saturday 9/30 9 PM EST (ESPN)
  • Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL
  • Spread: Alabama -28
  • Ole Miss Players to Watch: QB Shea Patterson: 86-122, 1281 YDS, 11 TD, 4 INT
                                                     WR A.J. Brown: 16 REC, 389 YDS, 4 TD
  • Alabama Player to Watch: QB Jalen Hurts: 45-70, 550 YDS, 4 TD, 0 INT

Game Outlook: The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide enter a traditional “trap game” this week in Tuscaloosa. The 2-1 Ole Miss Rebels come into Bryant-Denny Stadium with a lot of confidence. Ole Miss has won the rivalry game in 2 of the past 3 years, with a 23-17 win in 2014 and a 43-37 win in 2015 in Tuscaloosa. Last year they played the Crimson Tide close again, losing by a score of 43-48. The Rebels have assumed the underdog role against the Crimson Tide and have had success as they look for another upset victory. QB Shea Patterson will lead the Rebels into battle with his solid 11/4 TD to INT ratio. #1 Alabama is solid as ever. Dual-threat QB Jalen Hurts returned for his Sophomore season and has been nothing short of spectacular. Leading Alabama to a 4-0 record, including a win vs #3 Florida State, Hurts has a 4/0 TD to INT ratio and 360 yards rushing with 3 TDs on the ground. Add weapons RB Damien Harris, RB Bo Scarbrough, and WR Calvin Ridley and the Crimson offense is just as strong as its notorious defense that held #3 Florida State to only 7 points. The Crimson Tide win, but Ole Miss rises to the occasion and creates another classic in Tuscaloosa.

Quibbl Prediction: Alabama 30 – Ole Miss 20

#7 Georgia Bulldogs @ Tennessee Volunteers

  • When: 3:30 PM EST (CBS)
  • Where: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, TN
  • Spread: Georgia -7.5
  • Georgia Players to Watch: QB Jake Fromm: 43-69, 650 YDS, 7 TD, 1 INT
RB Nick Chubb: 59 CAR, 371 YDS, 6 TD
  • Tenn Players to Watch: QB Quinten Dormady: 71-121, 861 YDS, 6 TD, 4 INT
RB John Kelly: 81 CAR, 450 YDS, 6 TD, 18 REC, 182 YDS

Game Outlook: The Georgia Bulldogs come off an impressive 31-3 win vs the #17 Mississippi State Bulldogs. The defense looked strong and the dynamic backfield stronger. Georgia boasts 3 RBs who have amassed 190 yards rushing, led by star RB Nick Chubb who has 6 rushing TDs. QB Jake Fromm leds a solid passing attack that gives the Georgia offense balance that may be unmatched in college football. The Tennessee Volunteers come into this SEC – East contest with a record of 3-1, with their lone loss coming at #24 Florida. The Volunteers are led by RB John Kelly who garners a heavy workload each week in both the running and passing games. If the Tennessee offensive line can provide some holes from Kelly, the Volunteers might be able to stir momentum in front of their home crowd and pull off an upset. However, Georgia has looked too strong this season to drop a game against an unranked opponent, whether or not it is home or away. In the end, Georgia sticks with the run game and wares down Tennessee for the victory.

Prediction: Georgia 40 – Tennessee 23
