With the MLB Trade Deadline Set for Monday… What’s left to come?
By Columnist Matt Lieberman
As we enter August, we are more than halfway through an exciting season in Major League Baseball. After seeing the domination of teams like the Houston Astros and players like Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, as well as the disappointing campaigns of clubs like the reigning World Series champion Chicago Cubs, the trade deadline is soon approaching. After Monday at 4 P.M. ET, teams will no longer be able to make deals. Quibbl takes a look at some of the top trade rumors of this year, and asks you, the quibbler, to take your picks on will happen before Monday’s deadline.
Will the Washington Nationals make a major move before the deadline?
The Nationals are desperate for help in the bullpen, but they do not look to be interested in parting ways with their top three prospects — Erick Fedde, Victor Robles, and Juan Soto — despite the fact that none of them necessarily have make-or-break potential. Nonetheless, can they make a reasonable deal before the deadline?
Will the Oakland Athletics move pitcher Sonny Gray?
The healthy Gray has demonstrated some prowess thus far this season with a 3.43 ERA. Rumor has it that the young starter may be dealt out of Oakland before the upcoming deadline. Will the A’s trade him?
Will Cincinatti trade All-Star shortstop Zack Cozart?
Cozart is showing off some impressive numbers and strong play up the middle on defense. It seems as if many clubs will at least look into picking him up for the rest of the season. Will the Reds trade him away by the deadline, or keep him for now?
Will Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish get dealt before the trade deadline?
Expect Texas to ask a lot for Darvish, as they sit on the edge of the American League wild-card race. They will likely ask teams such as the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers to take deal on the ace.
Will the Tigers trade away one of these three players before the trade deadline: pitcher Justin Verlander, catcher Alex Avila, second baseman Ian Kinsler?
The Tigers are reportedly hoping to make some moves before the upcoming trade deadline. Will one of these players get dealt before the deadline?
Will the New York Yankees add a first baseman?
The Yankees are reportedly hoping to add a first-baseman before the deadline. Oakland’s Yonder Alonso’s name has been thrown as around a possible option. Will they make a move or stay put in the next few days?
Will the Orioles trade away lefty pitcher Zach Britton?
With a slim chance to make the playoffs (6.1% according to Fangraphs as of July 26), the trade rumors have been buzzing about the southpaw Britton. Will the O’s decide to send Britton- who has a 3.50 ERA this season- away in an attempt to receive valuable assets?
Will the Diamondbacks step up their pitching?
Rumors are spreading that the NL wild-card competitor will add some pitching in the form of the New York Mets’ Addison Reed, the Los Angeles Angels’ David Hernandez or another pitcher. Will they make a move to improve their pitching?
